Scientific Thursday :The Attack of the Straw

The Attack of the Straw
Here's an easy way to learn about inertia and momentum

You will need:
A raw potato
Straws

What to do:
Put a potato on the table or kitchen counter and hold it firmly with one hand.
With a fast, strong push, stab the potato with the straw.

Observe what happens? Did the straw bend or go into the potato? The straw should go into the potato. If it didn't, try again with another straw--maybe a little faster or harder.
An object remains at rest (the potato, in this case) or keeps moving (the straw, in this case) unless it is acted upon by some external force.

Cooking Tuesday: Elephant Ears

Elephant Ears

What you need:

1. Frozen Puff pastry sheets (found in the freezer section in any grocery store )

2. Pizza sauce

3. Shredded cheese (preferably Mozarella)

Lets Get Started:

Thaw the Frozen Pastry Sheets per package directions.

Take 1 square strip of the pastry sheet and spread the pizza sauce on it.

Sprinkle the cheese sparingly on top .

Roll the left side of the pastry sheet till the middle of the square.

Similarly roll the right side of the pastry sheet to the middle of the square.

Now fold one half over the other half as if you are closing a book.

You should be able to see about 6 layers of the puff pastry.

Now cut the roll into about 3/4" pieces.

Place the pieces cut side up on a greased baking tray.

Perheat the oven to 400 degrees.

Bake the elephant ears for 5-6 minutes on one side and then turn them over again and bake for another 5-6 minutes on the other side .

A few people had mentioned to me after I had posted the deal for the Live Butterfly Garden that they could not get the Free Super Saver Shipping as the total does not go above $25.

Here is my solution:
Amazon has the Live Butterfly Garden for $13.45 and the Insect Lore Ladybug Land for $14.35 for a grand total of $27.80 which will qualify you for the Super Saver Shipping. The kids will be happy to see the metamorphosis of a Butterfly and a Lady bug, compare and notice the differences.
